1.
Why Did God Make People?
God
made everything for a reason. Human beings are at the centre of God’s plan and purpose
for the earth.
Habukkuk 2:14. For
the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
God created
Adam and Eve. He made man to rule over the animals, in the sky, land and water
and creeping things.
Genesis
1:26-29.
God gave
Adam and Eve the opportunity to live, learn about and understand Him from the
environment he put them in. He also gave
them a wonderful place to live. It was called The Garden of Eden. Eden means
‘pleasure’ in the original language.
Genesis
2:8. The Lord
God had planted a garden in the east. It was in Eden. There he put the man he
had formed.
Adam and Eve
had the ability to respond to the things around them in God’s Garden. God asked
Adam to choose names for the animals and gave him plants to eat. Man had
thoughts, feelings and appetites that guided his ability to respond to this
environment.
God
formed man from the dust and gave him breath. The
man became a living person, able to think feel and act.
Genesis 2:7. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and
breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Eve was made
from the bone and flesh of Adam. They had to live together as husband and wife.
God gave Eve to Adam to help him.
Genesis 2:18-23.
Adam and Eve
were in a state of continual living.
They needed to
eat the food God gave them in the Garden of Eden.
Genesis 1:31. "very good” This food gave them energy,
strength and power for continual living.
They also had
to obey God’s clear and simple law of Eden.
Genesis 2:16-17. The
Lord
God gave the man a command. He said, “You can eat the fruit of any tree that is
in the garden. 17 But you
must not eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you
do, you can be sure that you will die.”
Adam and Eve
failed to obey this simple law. As a result they were given the punishment that
God had warned would happen. They would die. They were then put out of the
garden to work and find their own way. Their children learned from them and had
the same problems that they had. Some chose to worship God while others lived
to satisfy their own selfish pleasures and ambitions.
Since then
all people are able to make choices and follow their own thinking or decision
making processes. Individual people, families and even governments often choose
to do things that are selfish and because of this there are many problems in
the world including death.
Romans 5:12. Sin
entered the world because one man sinned. And death came because of sin.
Everyone sinned, so death came to all people.
People have their own reasons for doing things based upon how they
think and what they want. Many people today are motivated by money and power.
As a result the world is full of problems because of the mistakes people make.
Even when people try to solve problems in a way that they think is best,
mistakes are made. Governments, organisations and religions are run by people.
Most of these people ignore God and the way Jesus taught us to live. A very sad
fact is that even when people try and solve problems with kindness mistakes are
made. Corruption and other problems can be found in religion and organisations
that are run by people.
Proverbs 14:2
There is a way that may seem right to a
man. But in the end it leads to death.
3. How can We be Saved From Death?
Humanity can be saved from all of these problems because God has given us
a solution. By reading the Bible and following Jesus people can be saved and
look forward to a time when the earth will be filled with peace and safety. This is the plan that Christians follow in
their lives. We will learn more about this in our next lessons.
We
recommend that candidates study Learn to Read the Bible Effectively and God’s
Plan With Man (Cambodia friendly versions) before
preparing for baptism. Slideshows and translated
versions of these are also available. See Lessons 13 and 14:
