                                                                                                      Basic English Series Cambodia.
                                                                                                      Ref: NIRV.  Slideshow available.

  1.    Before the Flood.
Adam and Eve’s son Cain became a great nation. The people were like him because children learn from their parents.
Genesis 4:17-22.
Just like Cain they did not listen to God. They lived for pleasure, without rules and used violence to get what they wanted. Eve had another son called Seth who was like Abel.
Genesis 4:25-26.
Seth’s descendants followed God’s way and remembered his promise to destroy sin and give them a better future. Cain’s descendants were called the sons of man and Seth’s the sons of God. The sons of God looked at how the sons of men were living and some chose to join them by marrying their women. Soon, nearly everyone followed Cain’s thinking.
 Genesis 6:1-8.
Seth had a son called Noah. The earth had become an evil place. Noah remained faithful and continued to worship the one true God. God told Noah He would make it rain and destroy all living things with a flood.
Genesis 6:13-18.
God told Noah to build a large boat, called an Ark, to save Noah and his family. God waited 120 years. The people had time to listen to Noah but they ignored him and did not change. Before this time the land was watered by dew and water that came up from the ground (Genesis 2:6) The people would have been surprised when the rain began to fall from the sky and did not stop.
                           2.  Noah Trusted and Obeyed God.
Noah’s faith was strong. He built the Ark just as God had told him to. In those days people lived much longer. Noah waited for 120 years but was ready when God told him to go into the ark.
Genesis 6:22. Noah did everything exactly as God commanded him.
Genesis 7:1. Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation’.

3.     The Flood.

Genesis 7 and 8.Noah and his family went into the Ark. After seven days the rain began to fall and the flood began.

Genesis 7:10. After seven days the flood came on the earth.

During the seven days the people outside the ark saw that nothing had happened! There would be laughing and mocking, they would think he was some sort of madman.

How quickly they would change when it began to rain. As the waters rose, they began to think that they were going to die, to drown in the flood. It was too late. The earth was covered by water for 150 days.
Genesis 7:17-24.
The flood destroyed everything that had the breath of life in it.

4.        After the Flood.
After the rain stopped the flood went down slowly.
Genesis 8:4. On the 17th day of the seventh month, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.
Mount Ararat is in modern Turkey. God told Noah to leave the ark and make a fresh start on the earth. Genesis 8:16-17.
The first thing that Noah did when he came out of the ark was to build an altar and sacrificed animals to God. This tells us what was in his heart. It was a new beginning and he put God first. He burnt the sacrifice completely until it was ash. This showed Noah’s total commitment to God. He could have run out of the Ark and said that the whole world was his.
God was pleased with Noah’s sacrifice. The sweet smell of the burning animal went up to God, showing that his action pleased God. Just like Abel, Noah gave his best to God.

5    A New Beginning.
Genesis 9.

After the Flood there were only eight people alive on the earth. God’s command was that they were to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. For the first time man was told by God to eat fish and meat but not the blood. This belonged to God.

6.            A New Covenant.
Genesis 9:8-17.
God promised Noah that he would never flood the earth again. As a sign of this He put the rainbow in the sky. God said that the rainbow would remind Him of His promise.
Every time we see a rainbow in the sky, we are reminded of the faithfulness of God’s word There are so many lessons that we can learn from the time of the flood. We can see how people are living today. God is patient and has given people time to change and listen to Him. We have to be faithful and trust God because he has shown us a new way to be safe. God sent Jesus to show us the way to live and be ready for the time when he will come and bring justice to the earth. All wickedness will be destroyed and the whole earth will be filled with God’s way and peace forever. This is the good news for everyone who will listen to God.
