David
was the second king of Israel after Saul. He was a shepherd when God chose
him. God loved David and promised that he would be a great king and Israel
would have peace. God also promised David would have a son who would build a
house for God and rule on David's throne forever.
1.
Personal Promise.
David did become a great King. God loved David
because he had a good heart. Although
he made some terrible mistakes he cried out to God for forgiveness. He was truly
sorry for what he did.
2 Samuel
7:8-9 “So tell my servant David, ‘The Lord who rules over all says, “I took you away from the
grasslands. That’s where you were taking care of your father’s sheep and
goats. I made you ruler over my people Israel.
9 I have been with you everywhere you have gone.
I cut off all of your enemies when you were attacking them. Now I will make you famous. Your name will be just as respected
as the names of the most important people on earth.
2. Promise to Israel.
God
promised that Israel would be a safe country.
2 Samuel 7:10-11. I
will provide a place where my people Israel can live. I will plant them in
the land. Then they will have a home of their own. They will not be bothered
anymore. Evil people will no longer crush them, as they did at first.
11 That is what your enemies have done ever
since I appointed leaders over my people Israel. But I will give you peace
and rest from all of them. “I tell you
that I myself will set up a royal house for you.”
This promise will come to pass in the future.
This prophecy is in the Bible.
Jeremiah
32:37-42.
3. Promise of a Son, a House and a Kingdom.
David's son Solomon became the next king and built
a temple for God.
2 Samuel 7:12-13. Some day your life will come to an end.
You will join the members of your family who have already died. Then I will
make one of your own sons the next king after you. And I will make his kingdom
secure. 13 He
is the one who will build a house where I will put my Name. “I will set up the
throne of his kingdom. It will last forever.
David had many sons and he chose Solomon
to be king when he died. Solomon was a wise King and Israel enjoyed peace and
prosperity.
2 Chronicles 6:10. “The Lord has kept the promise he made. I’ve
become the next king after my father David. Now I’m sitting on the throne of
Israel. That’s exactly what the Lord
promised would happen. I’ve built the temple for the Name of the Lord. He is the God of Israel.
Solomon built a house
for God but he did not rule forever.
One thousand years later God
told Mary, a young Jewish girl, that she would have a son who would be son of
man and Son of God.
Luke 1:31-33. You will become pregnant
and give birth to a son. You must name him Jesus.
32 He will be great and will be called the Son of
the Most High God. The Lord God will make him a king like his father David of
long ago. 33 He will rule forever over his
people, who came from Jacob’s family. His kingdom will never end.”
A good man called Joseph agreed to marry
Mary even though he was not the true father of Jesus. He understood God’s plan
and became Jesus’ legal father. Mary and Joseph both came from the line of
David.
Galatians. 4:4
But then the right time came. God sent
his Son. A woman gave birth to him. He was born under the authority of the law.
4. David will be Raised from the Dead.
2 Samuel 7:16 “Your
royal house and your kingdom will last forever in my sight. Your throne will
last forever.”
Although David died, God promised that he would rise from the dead to
see his kingdom established forever.
2 Samuel 7:12. Some
day your life will come to an end. You will join the members of your family who
have already died. Then I will make one of your own sons the next king after
you. And I will make his kingdom secure.
This was David’s hope for the future.
Psalm 71:20-21. You
have sent many bitter troubles my way. But you
will give me new life. Even if I’m almost in the grave, you will bring me back. 21 You will honour me more and
more. You will comfort me once again.
Acts
2:25-29, 34. David spoke
about him. He said, “I know that the Lord is always with me.
He is at my right hand. I will always
be secure. 26 So my heart is glad. Joy is on
my tongue. My body also will be full of hope. 27 You will not leave me in the grave. You will not let your Holy One rot away. 28
You always show me the path that leads to life. You
will fill me with joy when I am with you.’ 29 “Brothers, you can be
sure that King David died. He was buried. His tomb is still here today.
34 David did not go up to heaven. But he said, “‘The Lord
said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand.”
Our hope is to be given eternal life when Jesus Christ rules the earth.
We will see David’s throne established in the Earth. David will bow down to
Jesus who sits on God’s throne.
